Before the day
- Make sure the tank is completely empty. Even a little water adds weight and makes the load swing.
- Prepare the base on the roof first, and check the roof can carry the tank when full.
- If an old tank is coming down, disconnect it and drain it.
- Choose where the crane will park in front of the house and move the cars.
The lift, step by step
- The crane parks and sets its outriggers on firm ground.
- The rigger slings the tank with suitable straps so it hangs level without crushing.
- The operator lifts slowly, with a tag line that stops the tank spinning in the wind.
- Someone on the roof receives it from a safe position and guides it onto the base without standing under it.
- The tank is set down and the slings are removed.
Safety
- Nobody ever stands under a suspended load.
- Lifting stops in strong wind: a tank is big and light, so wind moves it quickly.
- Watch for power lines between the crane and the building.
- People on the roof stay away from the edge while the tank comes in.
Not just tanks
The same method applies to AC units, generators, solar panels and building materials that must reach the roof. In every case the load weight and lifting distance decide the right crane.
