Moving a caravan or portable cabin: what to prepare

Caravans and portable cabins are common on farms, rest houses and project sites, and they move often. Moving one takes a crane lift, a suitable trailer and a careful set-down at the new site.

How a caravan is moved

  • A crane lifts the cabin with slings or chains on its lifting points.
  • It is loaded onto a lowbed or flatbed depending on weight and size.
  • It is tied down and secured for the road.
  • At the new site a crane lifts it off and sets it on its base.

Prepare the cabin

  • Disconnect power, water and drainage completely.
  • Empty heavy furniture and appliances, or secure what stays inside.
  • Close and secure doors and windows, and remove outside AC units that stick out.
  • Check the underframe and lifting points for rust or damage.

Prepare the new site

  • The base or blocks are ready and level in the final spot.
  • The entrance lets the lowbed and crane in, and the crane can park close to the base.
  • Services are ready to connect after set-down.

What to give the owner for a quote

  • The cabin's size (length and width) and type.
  • The current and new locations as map links.
  • Photos of the cabin from the sides, and from underneath if possible.
  • Photos of both site entrances.

FAQ

Do I need a crane at both sites?

Usually yes: one lift to load and one to unload, or the same crane travels with the lowbed. It's easiest when one company does the whole job.

Can the cabin move with its AC units on?

Well-fixed window and split units usually travel with it, but units that stick out are better removed so they aren't hit during the lift.
